We interrupt our usual broadcast to bring you spring greetings. For those of you OBA Nation members who celebrate Easter, I hope you had a joyous day yesterday and are still recovering from a food coma. Usually, I spend the weekends getting our newsletter teaching storytelling mechanics and why storytelling matters put together, but this weekend I let myself be talked into being lazy, going on fun adventures to visit family and friends, and ignoring as many work-related things as I could.
Springtime is usually not my happy time. I kind of hate everyone talking about new beginnings, fresh starts, and the earth coming alive again after winter. The only thing thriving for me is pollen and my allergies. But I’m going to be one of those people and talk about spring anyway, because underneath the cringey stereotype is a real message we should take to heart as creatives.
Appreciate the stories surrounding you in the traditions you participate in. The family and friends who celebrate with you. Appreciate the story that the Earth tells in spring with each new green thing—that no matter winter’s best attempt at death, life always triumphs. In each small rebellion of a blade of grass pushing through ground that tried to snuff it out, be reminded that bravely telling our stories can shine the same strength of hope into our bleak and tired world.
Next week we will be back with our regular Monday newsletter. As always, we’ll be sharing encouragement and hot tips throughout the week on Notes and our other socials to empower the good work all you creative souls here are doing and the brave words you are writing. Can’t wait to see you there!
